There are basically two kinds of searches. One search is to determine if you can obtain a patent. So this is what we call a pre-examination search, where a searcher will try to see if there is anything to stop you from getting a patent, if what people have done before, what we call the prior art, prevents you from obtaining a patent on your invention.
