METHOD OF IMPROVING SIDETONE SUPRESSION IN HANDS-FREE PHONES IN CARS PATENT OBTAINED BY LERNER & GREENBERG, P.A.
Article Date: 11-10-2003
Ralph Locher, a Shareholder with Lerner & Greenberg, P.A., successfully obtained a patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office for a method of improving acoustic sidetone suppression in hands-free telephones (U.S. Patent 6,618,481).
This invention is exceptional because it overcomes a lot of the disadvantages that previous technologies had because they were made to suppress echoes that interrupted the connection, said Locher. The new technology now allows for a full duplex conversation.
The method for this technology, invented by Gerhard Schmidt with Infineon Technologies, is achieved by detecting spatial changes using a combination of a power evaluation and a correlation of the measured microphone signals.
The sidetone suppression for hands-free phones in cars is able to distinguish between the speaker and background noise, as it does in land-line based telephones, which makes for a much clearer conversation. Prior to this technology, it was virtually impossible to achieve full duplex mode, said Locher. Lerner & Greenberg, P.A. advises clients in key issues of intellectual property law, such as patents, trademarks, unfair competition, licensing, trade secrets, international patents and dispute resolution, as well as issues concerning the Internet and domain names.
