GAS AND STEAM TURBINE SYSTEM THAT GENERATES ELECTRICITY COST EFFECTIVELY PATENT OBTAINED BY LERNER & GREENBERG, P.A.
Article Date: 7-29-2003
Gregory L. Mayback, patent attorney with Lerner & Greenberg, P.A., obtained a patent from the United States Patent Office for an updated design of a gas and steam turbine system.
The system (issuing as patent no. 6,588,196), invented by Siegfried Bahr and Sergej Ressig, with the Siemens Corporation, is unlike its gas and steam turbine system predecessor because it generates electricity using inexpensive materials, uses only two pressure chambers, and requires only an average level of training for maintenance personnel.
A traditional gas and steam turbine system, in comparison, uses a complex system in order to achieve high efficiencies, requires two or more compression chambers positioned downstream using very high pressure, and, to operate such systems, the maintenance personnel must have a high degree of training. These factors combined with the cost of expensive materials and system setups have made the old systems financially undesirable. Therefore, the patented gas and steam turbine system was created as a simple, low maintenance, and cost effective system for efficiently producing electricity.
The newly patented system reduces prior complications by eliminating the high-pressure turbine -- a feature that considerably drops production costs. Because cooling and heating combustion air takes place in two stages -- using only medium - and low-pressure sections to produce superheated steam, power use is reduced while gas turbine power and efficiency are increased.
"Gas and steam turbine systems configured according to this invention are highly advantageous because they are able to achieve the same or greater efficiency than the conventional systems," Mayback said.
